![]() ![]() In the States, you have to deliberately look for history and the arts. Everyone knows about Shakespeare and Isaac Newton. That's the thing about Britain: There is so much culture and history just floating around over there that everyone absorbs it. We had a couple of not-big-enough window AC units. The house was never sealed, so there was always dirt and dust blowing through in the summer when it was unbearably hot and humid. My mother bought expensive hand me downs (It's from Neiman-Marcus, therefore it must be good) so she could dress me funny. Basically I never got an allowance despite begging and pleading, and I was never given any money to buy new clothes. We grew up in a house without central air or central heat, so it was usually uncomfortable. This is was in a large burb of a very large city with the usual resident symphony/opera/ballet/theater companies. You generally have to be exposed to those art forms when you are young to get in the habit of continuing to go. They paid for out of town summer orchestra camps too. ![]() My parents paid for lots of lessons on two instruments, symphony tickets and opera tickets. I played two instruments in my high school orchestra. If there is a major league theater in your town, you might go to plays or musicals. Going to the opera is not middle class because if you are solidly middle class, you are not going to be exposed to classical or jazz concerts or the opera. I didn't truly get into opera until they started putting up surtitles about thirty years ago. They are called Surtitles, where I grew up. Now they put the words up over the stage on a little screen where you can read along. You want orchestra seats on the floor, or the first set of boxes, yeah, you can spend a lot. The sound is great but you can't see the singers or the scenery very well. Opera tickets are no more expensive than any other concert, and can be much less expensive than pop concerts or pro ball games. I would call going to the opera upper middle class in the States. >!insert spoiler here!< Other subreddits you might like: some Mod posts Serious posts Megathread Breaking news Unfilter Please use spoiler tags to hide spoilers.
